From what I gather, the Saracens began a long, long time ago when my parents were young children. (1958, to be exact.) The newly renamed Calgary Barbarians (formerly Calgary Rugby Club) divided into the Saracens RFC and the Saints RFC. Both clubs are still around and strong today. Throughout its history, the Saracens have seen many changes to the Calgary rugby scene and have learned from them.
Now
Today, the Saracens boast three senior men's teams, two senior women's teams, and seven youth squads. We are not a large club by any standards, but we have— in my admittedly biased opinion— the best club in the city. The Saracens are based on a tradition of camaraderie, brotherhood (and now sisterhood), and enjoyment. We are here, of course, to win all the matches we can, but more importantly to enjoy the great game and the life that comes with it.
Leadership
For many years, the Saracens have been leaders in high school coaching. As the vast majority of our players are alumni of Calgary schools, many take the opportunity to develop the game at that level. It is this that allows the club to grow, as a steady stream of young players is vital to the survival of any club. Development of new players is greatly stressed in the club, as has been shown in the past few years of representative ball in Alberta as well as at the club level.
The Saracens are a well rounded club, from the under-8s to the senior men's and women's sides. The club has had a decorated history, and will no doubt prosper well into the future.
